Undersized rod bearings have extra material thickness on the inside of the bearing facing the crankshaft journal. Undersized bearings are needed when the crank has been machined or ground undersize.

The steel backing provides strength and durability, the babbitt overlay provides the critical surface characteristics of slipperiness and conformability.
